Age spots, Liver spots, Sun spots, and Senile freckle, are all names for blemishes on the skin associated with aging and exposure to the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation. They generally range in color from light brown to red or black. These blemishes are located in areas most often exposed to the sun, particularly the hands, face, shoulders, and arms.
From roughly the age of 40 (but can occur at any age) the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure. Those who spend large amounts of time in the sun are the most susceptible.
In the overwhelming majority of cases Age spots (Liver spots, Sun spots, etc..) pose no threat and require no treatment. However, despite being a benign condition Liver spots are sometimes considered unsightly and people choose to have them removed.
There are three main methods used for the removal of these spots:
1) Electro-surgery: This method can only be administered by a highly trained physician, and is costly with a long recovery period.
2) Cryotherapy: This method is the application of extreme cold to the effected area and is designed to freeze the tissue at a cellular level.
3) Laser Treatment: This method is a preferred method to many due to cost and little or no recovery time. Laser treatment uses concentrated burst of light to treat the effected tissue.
Here at the Houston Tattoo Removal Clinic we use a ND: Q-switch laser or a RD1200 to remove these skin blemishes. We have found that this is an extremely effective method for the removal of these unwanted spots on the skin. We have found that many people have needed as few as ONE treatment for their age spot to be PERMANENTLEY removed. Some people do require multiple treatments depending on the type and size of blemish that is being removed. Also continued exsposure to U.V light can cause new blemish to arise.
